Vengeance

Dragons stalk the streets, puffing out smoke and clattering their mechanical wings.

I stand a safe distance away: far away, in a cradle held up by a crane normally used for Dinner in the Sky. On another time, an adventurous spirit would have been seen bungee jumping there. That time is gone.

Vengeance (1)

The dragons are on the attack, albeit not randomly: one needs to pay attention to see this.

Initially, the street party-goers were oblivious to the dragons’ presence. The loud electronic dance music drowned the sound of the clattering wings. The smoke prompted them to start running. The merriment turned into chaos and stampede.

I am a witness.

In the midst of the commotion, I watch one dragon focuses on one pile of bodies pushing and squirming near the DJ’s corner. It found its target.

I turn my back on the street scene below me. I don’t need to see more. It’s enough for me. He tried to kill me on our skydiving escapade. I sent my mechanical dragons to kill him. We’re even.

Nothing will take away the pain caused by his betrayal. My artificial intelligence can create and control killer robots and my bionic body may be unbreakable but I remain with a broken heart.

He should have at least known what I’m capable of.

What do you think? I feel like a winner. 🙂

Fury of a woman scorned, right? Don’t provoke. Lol!

I saw the tweet in the morning. Fine, I had a glimpse of the notification. The results of the latest Cracked Flash Fiction competition were out. The tweet was also a shout-out to the winner/s. Hey, my twitter handle is there!

CCF - Golden Approval

But no, I didn’t win…

I couldn’t go to Twitter even though I badly wanted to be a part of it. Work started early for me as I had a deadline with the Auditor and I couldn’t be distracted. When I finally got a gap (still at the Auditors), I managed a response that was screaming for punctuation marks. And I’m a writer! Then again, that was the Accountant me. Ha-ha! I apologize to those who read that horrible tweet reply.

Oh well…

Actually, I checked out Cracked Flash Fiction‘s site the night before. I couldn’t wait! I liked my story. I thought my main character was fierce. I finished writing it on my mobile as we got to the casino. Some gamblers must have thought I was crazy as I was grinning like crazy. I sent the draft to my four beta readers. Lol! They’re my three friends who read my stories because they love me (or, I give them no choice) and my son’s friend who’s forced to either listen to me when I read out loud my stories or read my drafts. Thanks a million to Catey, Manisha, Tumisang and Nic!

As I said, I didn’t win. But, I got an honorable mention. I just need to practice more. I need to read fantasy as that’s what I’m trying to write. If I keep writing, a win will come.

Here’s what our lovely judge said:

Great imagery throughout.

The loud electronic dance music drowned the sound of the clattering wings.

I love this sentence. Well done.

And guess what? From now on, I will always remember (I hope) when the colon is the right punctuation and not the semi-colon. Thanks, Ronel! 🙂 It really is great to have feedback!

By the way, that wasn’t the only win from that evening. We did take home small progressive jackpot from the Wild Zone.

      1. Thanks for making me feel better. I realized I actually like to use it. I think it’s my conscious effort to avoid the comma. But I think I do like to use the Oxford comma, too.
